Our History

Our History

March of 2011 – Erin Kiltz began a pilot program called Light Texas, with the Bridges Program of Georgetown ISD. Students became artisans and began making and selling handcrafted pottery. Their only problem was keeping up with demand!

June of 2011 – Summer Fun began and involved 8 Citizens working in three enterprises: horticulture, baking and pottery. By the end of Summer Fun, the participants had planted over 1,700 sunflowers, handmade beautiful pottery and tested dozens of recipes for granola, a future baking enterprise. These amazingly gifted individuals found that they could be successful farmers, potters and bakers, capable of growing and making wonderful products to sell to the public. What a sense of achievement!

August of 2011 – The Brookwood Community expands for the first time ever in 30 years to Georgetown- Central Texas area. Light Texas was absorbed by the Brookwood Community and became Brookwood in Georgetown under the umbrella of their 501c3. Brookwood in Georgetown are forever thankful to the Brookwood Community for setting the bar of excellence in serving adults with intellectual disabilities and continuing to inspire our BiG community.

November 2011 – Brookwood in Georgetown (BiG) officially opens a entrepreneurial vocational program located in Georgetown Church of Christ.

October 2014 – BiG launches our first capital campaign to purchase and renovate a facility which will join our vocational program with our retail venue. The new location will also allow us to triple the Citizens we can serve.

• Celebrate our Citizens and their unique gifts and abilities;
• Empower our Citizens to use their talents to engage in productive enterprises; and
• Teach our Citizens the value of serving their community.
Our BiG Citizens work 4 days a week creating pottery, planting sunflowers, making cards and jewelry, and baking granola.
